Early Life

Vertner Woodson Tandy, born on May 17, 1885, in Lexington, Kentucky to his parents, Henry Tandy and and Emma Brice Tandy and raised in the home pictured. His father was one of the leading contractors in Lexington Kentucky, obviously having an affect on his son's career path. Henry Tandy was also the Deputy Grand Master of many fraternal lodges. It was said that his fathe was also a huge influence on his personality becasuse he was a well respected man in the community. Pictured in the background is the home in which Tandy grew up in which is now a landmark in Lexington, Kentucky.

 

Tandy went to high at at the Candler School in Lexington. It was early that he found his passion for architecture. In 1904 he first went to Tuskegee Institute to study architecture. At Tuskegee he was under the tstudy of professor Booker T. Washington. He then transferred to Cornell in 1905 to continue studying it and achieve higher levels.
